Saudi King Abdullah Hospitalization Sends Stocks Tumbling But It's Oil That Is Suddenly Paying Attention | Zero Hedge

Saudi King Abdullah Hospitalization Sends Stocks Tumbling But It's Oil That Is Suddenly Paying Attention | Zero Hedge

Earlier today, Saudi Arabia's stock market fell sharply with the Tadawul All Share Index plunging following a Saudi state TV report that King Abdullah had been admitted to hospital for tests. As shown in the chart report, the index tumbled as much as 6% in the minutes after the Saudi Press Agency report which quoted a brief royal court statement.

But while the ill king of the King, aged 90, is hardly news to the discounting stock market, a few more nuanced interpertation of not just what happens if and when the King passes away but what Saudi succession looks like, is much more relevant for oil - especially now that Saudi Arabia has unilaterally decided to tear apart OPEC in its push to put US shale producers out of business.
As Emad Mostaque of EC Strat, accurately observes:
Oil prices are now at levels that cause real concern on the streets of Saudi Arabia, with the prospect of succession the icing on top that has caused retail investors to take the market down another leg.

This policy may not make it through a succession period, where public support and good will is essential, particularly as it has nearly been 20 years since the last change.

The new regent could decide to keep existing policy, change it completely or anything he decides. Similarly he has free reign to realign Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy as he wishes, which is a discussion for another time and place, but could have significant regional impacts.

A Supernova That Exploded In 1987 Caused Something So Huge That It Affects Us All | Collective-Evolution

A Supernova That Exploded In 1987 Caused Something So Huge That It Affects Us All | Collective-Evolution

25 years ago in the year 1987, something happened and the world felt it. The first globally synchronized meditation –commonly known as the first “Harmonic Convergence” – took place. Tens of thousands of people gathered all around the world at sacred sites around the planet to co-ordinate their intention. What intention? José Arguelles, who initiated the meditation put it this way:
There comes a point when things have to change. A vibration signal was sent out. Where the signal was coming from – whether it was coming from our genetic coding, whether it was coming from the Earth, whether it was coming from outer space, or whether it was coming from all of those – this signal went out and people responded to a signal. It is very much like when a species gets a signal to change the direction of its migration pattern.
massawakenIt was from that year on that the human mind began to open up more than it ever has before. Even though the status quo resisted these new ideas, more and more people began seeing through the old paradigm of war, environmental destruction, poverty, slavery and materialism, and instead opened their eyes and minds to a more wholistic worldview. People began questioning the many structures of society, and suppressed information began to resurface and become available to the masses. Ever since 1987, human consciousness has experienced a noticeable acceleration.
Now what is this all about? And why 26 years ago? Is this just some new age speculative talk? As much as world change is not a concept that needs to be backed up by science to be recognized as important, interesting studies have shown that this evolutionary movement isn’t just a coincidence or a simple initiative of a few individuals. The whole cosmos seems to be in.

The Prison State Of America | Zero Hedge

The Prison State Of America | Zero Hedge

Prisons employ and exploit the ideal worker. Prisoners do not receive benefits or pensions. They are not paid overtime. They are forbidden to organize and strike. They must show up on time. They are not paid for sick days or granted vacations. They cannot formally complain about working conditions or safety hazards. If they are disobedient, or attempt to protest their pitiful wages, they lose their jobs and can be sent to isolation cells. The roughly 1 million prisoners who work for corporations and government industries in the American prison system are models for what the corporate state expects us all to become. And corporations have no intention of permitting prison reforms that would reduce the size of their bonded workforce. In fact, they are seeking to replicate these conditions throughout the society.
States, in the name of austerity, have stopped providing prisoners with essential items including shoes, extra blankets and even toilet paper, while starting to charge them for electricity and room and board. Most prisoners and the families that struggle to support them are chronically short of money. Prisons are company towns. Scrip, rather than money, was once paid to coal miners, and it could be used only at the company store. Prisoners are in a similar condition. When they go broke—and being broke is a frequent occurrence in prison—prisoners must take out prison loans to pay for medications, legal and medical fees and basic commissary items such as soap and deodorant. Debt peonage inside prison is as prevalent as it is outside prison.
States impose an array of fees on prisoners. For example, there is a 10 percent charge imposed by New Jersey on every commissary purchase. Stamps have a 10 percent surcharge. Prisoners must pay the state for a 15-minute deathbed visit to an immediate family member or a 15-minute visit to a funeral home to view the deceased. New Jersey, like most other states, forces a prisoner to reimburse the system for overtime wages paid to the two guards who accompany him or her, plus mileage cost. The charge can be as high as $945.04. It can take years to pay off a visit with a dying father or mother.
Fines, often in the thousands of dollars, are assessed against many prisoners when they are sentenced. There are 22 fines that can be imposed in New Jersey, including the Violent Crime Compensation Assessment (VCCB), the Law Enforcement Officers Training & Equipment Fund (LEOT) and Extradition Costs (EXTRA). The state takes a percentage each month out of prison pay to pay down the fines, a process that can take decades. If a prisoner who is fined $10,000 at sentencing must rely solely on a prison salary he or she will owe about $4,000 after making payments for 25 years. Prisoners can leave prison in debt to the state. And if they cannot continue to make regular payments—difficult because of high unemployment—they are sent back to prison. High recidivism is part of the design.

Debtors’ prisons throwing disadvantaged Americans in jail

Debtors’ prisons may be on the rebound in America, with more citizens being sent to jail for not having the means to pay court mandated fines and fees. Though the US is no longer officially in the 2008 recession that devastated the pocketbooks of everyday people, the effects, including imprisonment, continue to be felt long after the much touted economic “recovery.” Legal analyst Mychal Wilson has more on the alarming practice.

The Rigging Triangle Exposed: The JPMorgan-British Petroleum-Bank Of England Cartel Full Frontal | Zero Hedge

The Rigging Triangle Exposed: The JPMorgan-British Petroleum-Bank Of England Cartel Full Frontal | Zero Hedge

The name Dick Usher is familiar to regular readers: he was the head of spot foreign exchange for JPMorgan, and the bank's alleged chief FX market manipulator, who waspromptly fired after it was revealed that JPM was the bank coordinating the biggest FX rigging scheme in history, as initially revealed in "Another JPMorganite Busted For "Bandits' Club" Market Manipulation." Subsequent revelations - which would have been impossible without the tremendous reporting of Bloomberg's Liam Vaughan - showed that JPM was not alone: as recent legal actions confirmed, virtually every single bank was also a keen FX rigging participant. However, the undisputed ringleader was always America's largest bank, which would make sense: having a virtually unlimited balance sheet, JPM could outlast practically any margin call, and make money while its far smaller peers were closed out of trades... and existence.
But while the past year revealed that FX rigging was a just as pervasive, if not even more profitable industry for banks than the great Libor-fixing scandal (for details see "How To Rig FX Like A Pro "Bandit", And Make Millions In The Process"), the conventional wisdom was that it involved almost exclusively bankers at the largest global banks including JPM, Goldman, Deutsche, Barclays, RBS, HSBC, and UBS.
Now, courtesy of some more brilliant reporting by Vaughan, we can finally link banks with the other two facets of what has emerged to be an unprecedented FX-rigging "triangle" cartel: private sector companies that have no direct banking operations yet who have intimate prop trading exposure, as well as central banks themselves.
By "banks" we, of course, refer to the ringleader itself: JP Morgan, and its former head of spot forex trading in London, Dick Usher. As for the company that benefited from its heretofore secret participation in the biggest FX rigging scandal in history, it is none other than British Petroleum.
We learn about all this thanks to a story that begins with, of all thing, a story about freshwater fishing at a lake in Essex called "Wharf Pool."
As Bloomberg reports, "an hour away by train, in London’s financial district, the lake’s owners ply their trade. Wharf Pool was purchased for about 250,000 pounds ($388,000) in 2012 by Richard Usher, the former JPMorgan Chase & Co. trader at the center of a global investigation into corruption in the foreign-exchange market, and Andrew White, a currency trader at oil company BP Plc. "
The plot thickens: was there more than a passing connection between the head FX trader at JPM and White "who’s known in the market as Tubby, is one of half a dozen spot currency traders working for British Petroleum (BP) in London. He and his colleagues, most of them ex-bankers, decide which firms will carry out their foreign-exchange transactions. That makes them prized clients for banks seeking a slice of the business and a glimpse into potentially market-moving trades. Passing on information was a way to curry favor."
In short, a typical Over The Counter relationship between a banker and a buyside client, one which is largely unregulated and where the bank hopes to be able to frontrun the client's orders by providing the client with confidential market moving information, thus generating more business with the client in the future. In this case, however, the buyside client was not a typical hedge fund, but the FX trading group at one of the world's largest energy companies: a group which trades enormous amounts of FX every single day, both with intent to hedge, and to generate a profit.

Massive B.C. gold mine near Alaska border gets environmental approval | 570News

Massive B.C. gold mine near Alaska border gets environmental approval | 570News

VANCOUVER – The federal government approved the environmental assessment application on Friday for the massive KSM gold and copper mine in northwestern British Columbia near the Alaska border.
The mine, which is owned by Seabridge Gold Inc. (TSX:SEA), is considered the largest undeveloped gold reserve in the world and also has copper, silver and molybdenum deposits.
The project would be just 35 kilometres from the Alaska border, and in August the state took the rare step of asking the Canadian government for involvement in the approval process over concerns for its rivers and fish.
But the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency concluded in its report that the KSM project isn’t likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
Seabridge CEO Rudi Fronk said the company was confident it would receive the approval because it has spent six years and $200 million working with government, local First Nations and the state of Alaska.
The company conducted 40 working group sessions with federal and provincial regulators, First Nations and American regulators, he said.
“From our perspective, the environmental assessment process in Canada works. However, it takes a very long time and is very expensive,” he said. “But if you get proper engagement with the regulators and with the First Nations and treaty nations, you can successfully get projects approved.”

MIT Researcher: Glyphosate Herbicide will Cause Half of All Children to Have Autism by 2025

MIT Researcher: Glyphosate Herbicide will Cause Half of All Children to Have Autism by 2025

Why? Evidence points to glyphosate toxicity from the overuse of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide on our food.
For over three decades, Stephanie Seneff, PhD, has researched biology and technology, over the years publishing over 170 scholarly peer-reviewed articles. In recent years she has concentrated on the relationship between nutrition and health, tackling such topics as Alzheimer’s, autism, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as the impact of nutritional deficiencies and environmental toxins on human health.
At a [recent] conference, in a special panel discussion about GMOs, she took the audience by surprise when she declared, “At today’s rate, by 2025, one in two children will be autistic.” She noted that the side effects of autism closely mimic those of glyphosate toxicity, and presented data showing a remarkably consistent correlation between the use of Roundup on crops (and the creation of Roundup-ready GMO crop seeds) with rising rates of autism. Children with autism have biomarkers indicative of excessive glyphosate, including zinc and iron deficiency, low serum sulfate, seizures, and mitochondrial disorder.

It Wasn't North Korea Or Russia: Sony Hack "Perpetrator" Said To Be Laid-Off, Disgruntled Employee | Zero Hedge

It Wasn't North Korea Or Russia: Sony Hack "Perpetrator" Said To Be Laid-Off, Disgruntled Employee | Zero Hedge

First it was, with "absolute certainly", North Korea. Then, out of the blue, an even more ridiculous theory emerged about the origin of the Sony hackers: Russia. Now, we finally get the truth, and as it turns out it was neither of the abovementioned sovereign actors who had nothing better to do than to hack movie scripts and racist emails: it was Sony's own disgruntled worker who was the source of the hack. According to Politico, FBI agents investigating the Sony Pictures hack were briefed Monday by a security firm that says its research points to laid-off Sony staff, not North Korea, as the perpetrator."
Researchers from the cyber intelligence company Norse have said their own investigation into the data on the Sony attack doesn’t point to North Korea at all and instead indicates some combination of a disgruntled employee and hackers for piracy groups is at fault.
But... but just a week ago the FBI was so absolutely certain it was North Korea it released the following statement:
Today, the FBI would like to provide an update on the status of our investigation into the cyber attack targeting Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). In late November, SPE confirmed that it was the victim of a cyber attack that destroyed systems and stole large quantities of personal and commercial data. A group calling itself the "Guardians of Peace" claimed responsibility for the attack and subsequently issued threats against SPE, its employees, and theaters that distribute its movies.

The FBI has determined that the intrusion into SPE's network consisted of the deployment of destructive malware and the theft of proprietary information as well as employees' personally identifiable information and confidential communications. The attacks also rendered thousands of SPE's computers inoperable, forced SPE to take its entire computer network offline, and significantly disrupted the company's business operations.

After discovering the intrusion into its network, SPE requested the FBI's assistance. Since then, the FBI has been working closely with the company throughout the investigation. Sony has been a great partner in the investigation, and continues to work closely with the FBI. Sony reported this incident within hours, which is what the FBI hopes all companies will do when facing a cyber attack. Sony's quick reporting facilitated the investigators' ability to do their jobs, and ultimately to identify the source of these attacks.

As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. Government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions.

MMS ON TRIAL ~ A Message from Jim Humble

http://StandByDaniel.com
http://GoFundMe.com/mmsdefensefund

-- BEGIN VIDEO TRANSCRIPT (ENGLISH) --

Hello, I’m Jim Humble. I’m the guy who discovered MMS, a mineral solution that I’m proud to say has saved thousands of lives.

We have a friend who urgently needs our help. His name is Daniel. Although no one has ever been hurt, the FDA has been trying for 5 years to put Daniel in prison for selling MMS.

Daniel Smith is going to trial in less than 90 days. But there is also an additional problem. This trial is also putting MMS on trial for the first time, and we want to make it the last time.

(Over 5 million malaria deaths since 2010. The answer costs less than 5 cents.)

I hope you understand that this fight is our fight. It is the fight of thousands of us who use MMS and of course people who may want to use MMS in the future.

Daniel is standing up for his family and for MMS and really for all MMS users. If Daniel loses, he faces up to 37 years in prison…can you imagine - 37 years for selling something that makes people well?

Let me say about Daniel that he is an amazing guy. He could have left the US any time during the past 5 years but he chose to remain here and fight for his family and for all MMS users.

If the FDA should win, they will use this case to arrest and try other MMS sellers like Daniel. Judging from the FDA’s past record, should they win a conviction, many people may go to prison because of this case. None of us are safe.

Worse yet, the more convictions the FDA gets for minerals and herbs, the more we the people will be limited to using pharmaceutical drugs.

There is also the fact that all housewives and guys now using MMS may not be able to get MMS any more.

Again I say, Daniel’s fight is for all of us. We have to stop them in their tracks now.

We need to raise a lot of money for Daniel’s defense, and we have only a few days to do it. We have some really good people lined up to help Daniel but it will cost a lot of money to bring them in.

If Daniel loses, we all lose. If Daniel wins, we all win. The FDA knows this well.

I don’t ask for your help very often, but MMS is under attack and Daniel needs our help. And so I am asking now: please everyone, give whatever you can to Daniel’s MMS Defense Fund today because it is really the defense fund for all of us who uses MMS.

The donation site is: http://GoFundMe.com/MMSDefenseFund

Or: http://StandByDaniel.com

Let the FDA know there are tens of thousands to fight for Daniel and for MMS. Tell them to stay out of our homes and out of our lives and to leave Daniel and his family alone.

I thank you in advance for your participation.

Thank you. ~ Jim Humble

You will make a change for the better.

Brazil's Economy Just Imploded | Zero Hedge

Brazil's Economy Just Imploded | Zero Hedge

China may have mastered the art of fabricating economic data to a level unmatched by anyone except the US Department of Labor, but its derivative countries have much to learn. And none other more so than one of China's favorite sources of commodities over the past decade: Brazil. It is here that things are going from worse to catastrophic, as disclosed in today's update of Brazil's fiscal picture.
Here are the disturbing facts showing that behind the world's propaganda growth facade, it is all hollow: Brazil's consolidated public sector primary fiscal balance, which posted a significantly worse than expected R$8.1bn primary deficit in November driven by the R$6.7bn deficit of the Central Government, dipped into negative territory: -0.18% of GDP, driven by the significant deterioration of the Central Government finances.
This is the worst fiscal outturn since November 1998. Furthermore, the primary surplus of subnational government (States and Municipalities) has also been eroding, a reflection of the authorizations given by the Treasury since 2011 for increased borrowing by the States. For instance, the States and Municipalities posted a negligible 0.08% of GDP surplus during Jan-Nov 2014, down from 0.46% of GDP during Jan-Nov 2013.

NSA Waited Until Christmas Eve To Release Details Of Its Illegal Surveillance On Americans | Techdirt

NSA Waited Until Christmas Eve To Release Details Of Its Illegal Surveillance On Americans | Techdirt

from the merry-christmas-everyone! dept

One of the recurring storylines from NSA defenders is that there's been "no abuse" of the surveillance programs. Except, that's not true. Leaked and released documents have shownthousands of examples of abuse including failed audits and minimal accountability. In fact, in many of the cases where abuse was found, it was only discovered thanks to employees confessing about abusing the systems years later -- meaning that it's quite likely that there are many more cases of abuse that the NSA itself doesn't even know about.

The ACLU has been seeking detailed reporting from the NSA on its abuses, filing a lawsuit against the agency for its failures to fully respond to a FOIA request. The NSA -- which has a habit of releasing important documents late on Friday evenings before a weekend -- took things one step further this time, waiting until Christmas Eve to dump a whole load of files detailing the NSA's abuse of surveillance practices. Some of the abuses appear rather egregious:
In a 2012 case, for example, an NSA analyst “searched her spouse’s personal telephone directory without his knowledge to obtain names and telephone numbers for targeting,” according to one report. The analyst “has been advised to cease her activities,” it said.
Of course, beyond this being a rather blatant form of abuse, it seems noteworthy that this particular example was not included in the report that the NSA gave Congress in 2013 supposedly highlighting all of the examples of abuse. In fact, as you read through these reports, it appears that abuse and "mistakes" were fairly widespread. Here's opening one of the many reports at random and showing just a snippet of the listings:
That's just one page out of 13 pages in that report, and the NSA just released nearly 50 such reports... on Christmas Eve. We'll be trying to dig through these in more detail as well, but it really says how badly the NSA wants to avoid discussing all these abuses, that it timed the release of these documents on Christmas Eve.

Jupiter's Great Red Spot is Sunburn, NASA Scientists Say | Space Exploration | Sci-News.com

According to a new study led by Dr Kevin Baines of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, the reddish color of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter is likely a product of chemicals being broken apart by solar ultraviolet (UV) light in the planet’s upper atmosphere.
This full-disc image of Jupiter was taken on 21 April 2014 with Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3. Image credit: NASA / ESA / A. Simon, Goddard Space Flight Center.
This full-disc image of Jupiter was taken on 21 April 2014 with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3. Image credit: NASA / ESA / A. Simon, Goddard Space Flight Center.
“Our models suggest most of the Great Red Spot is actually pretty bland in color, beneath the upper cloud layer of reddish material,” Dr Baines said.
“Under the reddish ‘sunburn,’ the clouds are probably whitish or grayish.”
“A coloring agent confined to the top of the clouds would be inconsistent with the competing theory, which posits that the spot’s red color is due to upwelling chemicals formed deep beneath the visible cloud layers. If red material were being transported from below, it should be present at other altitudes as well, which would make the red spot redder still.”
In the lab, Dr Baines and his colleagues blasted ammonia and acetylene gases – chemicals known to exist on Jupiter – with UV light, to simulate the Sun’s effects on these materials at the extreme heights of clouds in the Great Red Spot.

Illegal “Electronic Spying” and “Surveillance” of Americans, Internal NSA Reports | Global Research

Illegal “Electronic Spying” and “Surveillance” of Americans, Internal NSA Reports | Global Research

NSA (2)
The US National Security Agency (NSA) published a cache of “transparency” reports on its web page Wednesday in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted by attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The internally generated NSA reports, covering the years 2001-2013 and previously submitted to the Presidential Intelligence Oversight Board, show that NSA agents have consistently violated US law and the agency’s own internal regulations over the past decade.
The timing of the release, on Christmas Eve, was clearly designed to ensure that the event could be buried by the US media.
The reports show that NSA agents have carried out a range of illegal activities, including electronic spying on US persons (USP), stockpiling data that the agency is required by law to delete, continuing surveillance against targets after they have been found to be USP, and “disseminating” data acquired from surveillance against USP to other government agencies and entities.
Agents specifically targeted individuals not covered by any existing order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and used electronic surveillance technology to spy on significant others, spouses, and other associates.

The last time the market was as euphoric and as complacent as it is now, was in the happy go lucky days of 2006 when every day stocks surged without a care in the world, when Lehman bankers were looking to a comfortable retirement after cashing out their stock (then trading north of $70), when the only question was which mega M&A and supermega LBO will hit next, and when the then-brand new Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said there is nothing to worry about because subprime was contained and because home prices in the US just can not possibly drop. Not surprisingly, late 2006 was also when Citigroup held its first and only Plutonomy symposium: a joyous celebration of the 0.001%, or as Citi called them, "The Uber-rich, the plutonomists who are likely to see net worth-income ratios surge, driving luxury consumption", adding "Time to re-commit to plutonomy stocks – Binge on Bling. Equity multiples appear too low, the profit share of GDP is high and likely going higher, stocks look likely to beat housing, and we are bullish on equities."
Wait what? Was there really a time 8 years before the French economist Piketty bashed (and made millions in the process) class and wealth inequality, when one of the world's soon to be most insolvent banks had a symposium in which the bank pulled a page right out of pre-revolutionary France and celebrated the world's mega rich?
Yes, and that's not all.
In a trilogy of reports authored by Citi's then head of global srategy, Ajay Kapur (who subsequently quit Citi, tried his hand at running a hedge fund, failed, went to Deutsche Bank to head the bank's Asian equity strategy, failed, and has for the past year been working at Bank of America in that pluotcracy mecca, Hong Kong), couldn't find enough words of praise to explain just how great the brave new world is, one in which the 0.1% control about half of the world's financial assets, and said, on September 29, 2006, that "we think the balance sheets of the rich are in great shape, and are likely to continue to improve."
